Know The Game

Route Tree 101

A quick guide to the passing routes our receivers run. Every number on the tree is a different path downfield.

1
Flat
A quick, shallow route straight toward the sideline — great for a fast, easy completion.
2
Slant
A sharp angle across the middle right after the snap, used to beat man coverage quickly.
3
Curl
The receiver runs downfield, then stops and turns back toward the quarterback.
4
Out
Runs straight downfield, then breaks hard toward the sideline at a sharp angle.
5
Comeback
Sprints deep, then comes back toward the line of scrimmage near the sideline.
6
Post
Breaks diagonally toward the middle of the field, aiming for the goalpost.
7
Corner
Breaks diagonally toward the sideline, deep — the mirror image of the post.
8
Go / Fly
A full sprint straight downfield with no break — built to beat the defense deep.

Sting Academy is a nonprofit youth sports and development organization dedicated to empowering young people through athletics. We provide accessible opportunities for youth to develop athletic skills, academic readiness, leadership, character, discipline, confidence, and teamwork through competitive sports, coaching, mentorship, education, and community engagement. Our mission is to help young athletes thrive on the field, in the classroom, and in their communities.
